Report a find to FLO
All finds of Treasure must be reported to a Coroner responsible for the district in which they were found as a legal requirement. This must be done within 14 days of the date when they were found, or within 14 days of you realizing the find might be treasure.
How legal Treasure reporting works?
The new significance definition of Treasure is additional to the existing classes of Treasure, so these criteria should be considered first, before considering a possible significance case.
What qualifies legally as Treasure?
The following coin and artefact finds are Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996, if found after 24 September 1997 (or, in the case of the third listed category, if found after 1 January 2003)
The new Treasure Code of Practice (2023)
This Code of Practice came into force on 30th July 2023.
The primary aim of the Treasure Act 1996 (the Act) is to ensure that important and significant finds are preserved in museum collections for public benefit.
